TikTok is a social media platform that plays an important role in the digital media usage habits of young individuals. This research aims to analyse the reasons why Generation Z individuals use TikTok, the duration of their use and the effects of this platform on their habits such as entertainment, information and social interaction. The population of the research consists of active TikTok users born between 1997-2012. In the study, an online survey was applied to 351 Generation Z individuals and the data obtained were analysed using SPSS software.
The findings show that the participants use TikTok to meet various needs such as socialising, entertainment, information and motivation. It was determined that the participants preferred TikTok especially because of its short video format and algorithm that offers personalised content. However, it has been determined that TikTok has an important function in reducing loneliness, connecting with individuals with similar experiences and self-expression, but has a limited effect in areas such as increasing self-confidence and strengthening old social ties.
The study revealed that Generation Z's motivations for using TikTok are strongly related to the satisfactions offered by social media tools and that the platform is used not only for entertainment but also for information and personal development.
