Abstract

Social Media in the Context of Social Control and Surveillance: The Case of High School Students

As part of social control, individuals are kept under surveillance to ensure their safety. There are MOBESE cameras on streets, in stores, and supermarkets, which make everyone a potential suspect. Individuals who feel secure do not mind being watched and recorded by a camera wherever they go throughout their day. With the rapid proliferation of technological advancements, new surveillance practices and applications have emerged. Social media platforms, which have arisen in parallel with internet technologies, are now used as the most common surveillance tools. This study aims to measure whether the senior students of high schools in Uşak that admit students based on scores are aware of being monitored on social media platforms. The research population consists of students from Fevzi Çakmak Imam Hatip Project High School, Ertuğrul Gazi Imam Hatip Project High School, Science High School, Şehit Abdülkadir Kılavuz Anatolian Teacher High School, and Uşak Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School. According to the findings obtained in the study, participants' levels of surveillance awareness vary according to their purposes and frequencies of using social media.
