Abstract

Tension Map: Palestine-Israel Discourse Analysis with Europe's Leader Tweets

Abstract This study focuses on a discourse analysis of European leaders' tweets in relation to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The study explores the diplomatic discourse and attitudes of European leaders by analysing their social media posts from the beginning of the conflict until the 24 November temporary ceasefire. The method of discourse analysis is used to understand the leaders' use of language and emphasis, their political stances and their interactions with the parties to the conflict. This analysis involves the use of theories such as Habermas' communication theory and Foucault's discourse analysis. Habermas' communication theory provides a framework for understanding how communication affects the public sphere through leaders' use of social media, while Foucault's discourse analysis explores the structural dynamics of political discourse, emphasising power relations and the power of language in leaders' tweets. These analyses aim to illuminate Europe's position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the impact of social media on diplomatic relations in this process. The significance of the study is that it helps us understand Europe's political influence in the region and the dynamics in international relations by revealing the differences in discourse and diplomatic approaches of the leaders' tweets.
