Abstract

Somuncu Baba (2016) Filminin Anlatı ve Tema İncelenmesi

Cinema is a narrative art. Narrative refers to the transmission of a plot in a specific order. Similarly, it arises as a result of the relationship between character, place, and time. Throughout the centuries, various forms of narrative have emerged due to humanity's need for communication and storytelling. Oral culture later transformed into written and visual culture. On the other hand, the narrative element has been used with very little variation across all cultures. In this study, using purposive sampling, Kürşat Kızbaz's Somuncu Baba (2016), a film with a Sufi theme that has been rarely seen in recent years, was selected. The research uses both thematic and narrative analysis. It was determined that the concepts of asceticism, patience/trust in God, and ego/self are thematically prominent in the film. The narrative analysis was then conducted based on the plot and characters. The study concludes that Somuncu Baba is an ascetic, not seeking recognition, fame, or prominence. Furthermore, he is someone who has turned away from worldly pleasures and restrained his ego in this regard. With patience and without deviating from his path, he has undertaken various journeys/expeditions with the aim of reaching the divine Creator. In this context, it is seen that Somuncu Baba acted on the basis of his understanding of spiritual journey.
