Abstract

The Reflections of Semiotic Analyses in Graduate Theses in the Field of Cinema in Turkey

This study aims to examine the ways in which semiotic analysis methods are employed and their theoretical foundations in master's theses written in the field of cinema in Turkey. Semiotic analysis stands out as a powerful theoretical tool in film studies for understanding the production, transmission, and interpretation of meaning. In this context, it enables the deconstruction of cultural, ideological, and aesthetic layers through various objects of analysis such as films, posters, characters, settings, and genres. Within the scope of the research, master’s theses that include the keyword “semiotics” and are related to cinema, published between 2009 and 2024 in the Turkish National Thesis Center (YÖK), were examined using the content analysis method. The findings indicate that the most frequently selected objects of analysis were “films” and “film posters,” while the dominant semiotic functions were “adding interpretive depth” and “decoding cultural codes.” The results reveal a growing academic interest in semiotics in Turkish cinema graduate theses and highlight its effectiveness as a foundation for interdisciplinary analysis.
